The Guide to Private Messaging

Conversation is personal. Your identity shouldn't be the price of entry. Here's how to message, join communities and build a presence on Veil without exposing who you are offline.

Speak under a handle, not your legal name

Every Veil account is anchored to a username, not your real identity. People know you by the handle you choose — not by an email address, a phone number, or a profile scraped from somewhere else.

Direct messages stay between your devices

DM content is end-to-end encrypted: keys are generated on your devices and the server only ever stores ciphertext. Channels and communities are encrypted in transit and at rest.

Verify who you're talking to

Compare safety numbers in a conversation to confirm the person on the other end, and review the devices on your account at any time. Verification proves the account is real without revealing the person behind it.

Control who sees what

Set your profile visibility, DM permissions, online status and channel member visibility in Settings. You choose which parts of your presence are public.
